The VideoSense project will host a special session at the IEEE MMSP 2012 conference. MMSP 2012 is the 14th international workshop on multimedia signal processing. The workshop is organised by the Multimedia Signal Processing Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. The focus theme for this workshop is media-sharing social networks. MMSP 2012 aims to bring researchers from different areas (signal processing, information management, computer sciences, and psycho-sociology) together to explore the impact of multimodal signal and information processing for the emerging research field of media-sharing social networks, and ultimately to design multimedia systems with more efficient, secure, context-aware, and personalised services.

A special session will consist of 4 invited papers, and each paper will have an associated oral presentation of 20 minutes. The VideoSense special session will open up new perspectives on ways and means to promote privacy-respecting compliance using image processing and pattern recognition algorithms and techniques that enhance the privacy protection as an inherent property of the Video Content Analysis process. The aim is to provide insights into the problems of automatic decision making in privacy-aware systems by examining the achievable accuracy of different State-of-the-Art signal processing and pattern recognition techniques and presenting new approaches to enhance the privacy protection capability of such systems. Accordingly the proposed workshop will also present new image processing and computer vision algorithms as well as frameworks and architectures to be used in privacy-respecting video-analytics solutions.

The VideoSense European Network of Excellence has a mission to promote research collaboration focused on solution systems (algorithms and architectures) that support socio-ethical video-analytics. As part of such activities this year we have included within the MediaEval 2012 a relevant Challenge for the research community by way of a problem-based task referred to as the “Visual Privacy” Task seeking solutions for Situated Privacy-aware Video-Analytics.  We hope you will find this challenge interesting and inspiring and we very much like to encourage you or a member of your research team to consider participating.   For this you will need to visit the MediaEval 2012 website and register for the “Visual Privacy” Task.
